Years

Model year 2025 is listed twice: 2025 Model Ys were sold in both the original design and the redesign. The tire label inside the driver's door pillar shows your car's size.

Tesla labels this manual 2025+ and lists the load index and speed rating as minimums. Includes the six-seat Model Y L. Some 2025 model-year Model Ys were the original design, so check your door label if you have a 2025.

What Tesla says about tires (5)

Reading a size: in 255/45R19 104H XL, 255 is the width in millimeters, 45 the sidewall height as a percentage of the width, R19 a radial tire for a 19-inch wheel, 104 the load index, H the speed rating, and XL (extra load) or HL (high load) a version built to carry more weight.

Verdicts compare the tire maker's published load index and speed rating with the factory figures in the automaker's document, so they appear only where the automaker publishes those figures. Tire lines are listed by brand, not ranked.

Automaker-specific versions are sizes made to one automaker's specification; under each size they sit in their own collapsed list.

Maker ratings are the UTQG grades and new tread depth the tire maker publishes for that exact size, in the maker's own units. See what UTQG grades mean. Sort reorders a size's list by a published number you pick; it starts by brand.

Review links go to other sites' pages for that tire. We do not copy or show their scores; Tire reviews and tests says what each site measures.

Shop links go to each retailer's own size search. They are plain links: no retailer pays us, and the list is alphabetical. Costco sells tires too, but its size search needs your ZIP code, so we cannot link a size there.

Trims, notes and the source for every row are in the finder above, and every document is listed under Sources and method below. "Load and speed not published" means the automaker's document gives the size (and at most the load type) but not the load index or speed rating; the load index and speed rating are printed after the size on each tire's sidewall.

Check the load index and speed rating match before you buy; search results for some sizes are mostly LT truck tires. Costco sells tires too, but its size search needs a ZIP code, so it has no link here.

Sorted by brand by default; tap a column heading (or use Sort on a phone) to sort. "Sizes" counts every size the tire maker lists; "fit EVs on this page" counts the ones that are a factory size on a car we list. "Severe snow rated" means the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. "UTQG grades" and "New tread" span the values the tire maker publishes across the line's sizes (sorting by them uses the highest treadwear grade); the finder shows the figures for each size. Review links go to other sites' pages for the line; we do not show their scores. We have no test data of our own, so we do not rank tires.

Tire reviews and tests

We do not test tires, so for how a tire performs we link to other sites' reviews and tests, under each tire in the finder and in the EV tire lines table. What each site is and how it rates tires, from its own pages:

Do EVs wear tires faster?

These findings point the same way but measure different things, so each one says who or what was measured. Treat them as a range of evidence, not one agreed number.

39% of battery-electric owners said they replaced tires in the past 12 months, 19 points more than gas-vehicle owners.

Original owners of 2021 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership, surveyed August to November 2023. Self-reported replacements, so some may be for damage rather than wear.

J.D. Power, 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (opens in a new tab), February 8, 2024

26% more tire mass lost by a Tesla Model Y than a Kia Niro hybrid driven in convoy over the same 741 km (about 460 miles).

One test pair in the UK, both cars under a year old on their original tires. The Tesla weighed 489 kg more. Measured by weighing the wheels.

Emissions Analytics, Do no harm (test report) (opens in a new tab), March 20, 2023

15% higher tire-wear particle emissions for electric cars than comparable gas cars, the rate California's air regulator now uses in its EMFAC2025 model.

A review of 40 published test sets, applied to light-duty zero-emission vehicles. This is an emissions rate, not a tread-life figure.

California Air Resources Board, EMFAC2025 Technical Documentation, section 6.4 Tire Wear Emission Rate Update (opens in a new tab), May 2025

20% faster tire wear on average for an EV than a comparable gas vehicle, according to Michelin, which cites weight, torque and regenerative braking.

Michelin's stated average. Michelin does not publish the vehicles or method behind it.

When to replace them

Set cold pressure to the figure on your car's tire label on the driver's door pillar; the finder shows the automaker's published figure for each wheel where there is one. A gauge and an inflator make that a two-minute job: see our EV gear picks.

Do EVs need EV tires?

Not to follow the automaker's rules. Tesla asks for the original size, with a load index and speed rating that equal or exceed the original tire's, and those are the numbers the finder shows wherever the automaker publishes them. Where a manual prints the size only, the load index and speed rating are printed after the size on each tire's sidewall.

Size
Width, sidewall height and wheel diameter, as in 255/45R19. Staggered cars use one size in front and another in back.
Load index
A number for the most weight one tire may carry. Higher carries more.
Speed rating
A letter for the highest sustained speed the tire is built for. Later letters are faster, with H between U and V.
XL and HL

An "HL" before the size marks a High Load tire. It carries more weight than an Extra Load (XL) tire of the same size at the same pressure: for example HL 245/40R19 101Y is rated 825 kg against 750 kg for XL 245/40R19 98Y, both at 42 psi. HL is not limited to EVs. U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association: Tire Information Service Bulletin Vol. 54 No. 2 (2023) (opens in a new tab)

If your EV came from the factory with HL tires, every replacement must also be HL rated. Michelin USA: Tires rated for high load capacity (opens in a new tab)

What do UTQG grades mean?

  • The treadwear grade compares a tire with a control tire graded 100 on a government test course: a tire graded 150 should wear one and a half times as well on that course. 49 CFR 575.104 (opens in a new tab)
  • Real-world wear can differ a lot from the treadwear grade, because of driving habits, service practices, road conditions and climate. 49 CFR 575.104 (opens in a new tab)
  • Traction grades run AA, A, B, C from best to worst. They measure straight-line braking on wet pavement only, not cornering, acceleration or hydroplaning. 49 CFR 575.104 (opens in a new tab)
  • Temperature grades run A (best), B, C and show how well a tire resists building up heat on a laboratory test wheel. C is the minimum every passenger car tire must meet. The grade assumes the tire is properly inflated and not overloaded. 49 CFR 575.104 (opens in a new tab)
  • The tire maker (or the brand owner) must provide the grades for each tire, and each tire must be able to perform at the grades on its label. 49 CFR 575.104 (opens in a new tab)
  • The grading rule covers new passenger car tires, so light-truck (LT) tires fall outside it. It also exempts deep-tread winter-type snow tires, temporary spares, tires for rims 12 inches or smaller, and limited-production tires. 49 CFR 575.104 (opens in a new tab)

The finder shows the grades and new tread depth each tire maker publishes for your size, under each tire.

Some automakers do point to EV tires, for range. Hyundai's range advice: keep tires at the specified pressure and use tires made for electric vehicles. Hyundai: Ioniq 5 (model years 2026 to 2027) (manual, opens in a new tab), Ioniq 5 (model year 2025) (manual, opens in a new tab), Ioniq 6 (model years 2023 to 2025) (manual, opens in a new tab)

The warranty catch

Some tire makers tie their mileage warranty to whether the tire was made for EVs.

Pirelli honors only 80% of the treadwear mileage warranty when its regular (non-Elect) tires are used on an electric vehicle. Pirelli: Pirelli Limited Warranty (US), effective May 1, 2026 (opens in a new tab)

Yokohama says its mileage warranties may be lower on an EV unless the tire carries its EV mark on the sidewall. Yokohama Tire: ADVAN Sport EV A/S product and warranty page (opens in a new tab)

Pirelli's Elect marking identifies tires developed for the technical requirements of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Pirelli: Pirelli Limited Warranty (US) (opens in a new tab)

So check the warranty of the tire you are buying before you put a non-EV tire on an EV.

EV tire lines are sold for what they add on top of those numbers. 25 of the 39 EV tire lines we list come with noise-reducing technology in at least some sizes (by brand: Goodyear SoundComfort Technology foam, Hankook Sound absorber foam, Kumho K-Silent foam, Michelin Acoustic foam, Nokian Tyres SilentDrive foam, Pirelli Noise Canceling System foam and Sailun SilentTread tread design). Earlier versions (original design, model years 2020 to 2025) have their own sizes in the finder above. Model year 2025 is listed twice: 2025 Model Ys were sold in both the original design and the redesign. The tire label inside the driver's door pillar shows your car's size.

What size tires does the Tesla Model 3 have?

For the Model 3 (2024 redesign), model years 2024 onward, Tesla lists 4 factory wheel options: 18" Prismata: 235/45R18 front and rear (standard on Rear-Wheel Drive); 18" Photon: 235/45R18 front and rear (standard on Premium Rear-Wheel Drive and Premium All-Wheel Drive); 19" Dark Nova: 235/40R19 front and rear (optional on Rear-Wheel Drive, Premium Rear-Wheel Drive and Premium All-Wheel Drive); 20" Warp: 235/35R20 front, 275/30R20 rear (standard on Performance All-Wheel Drive). The manual gives sizes only; the load index and speed rating are printed after the size on each tire's sidewall. Earlier versions (model years 2017 to 2023) have their own sizes in the finder above.

Do electric cars need special EV tires?

Not to follow the automaker's rules. Tesla asks for the original size, with a load index and speed rating that equal or exceed the original. Tesla's manuals: If you choose a tire Tesla does not list, its load index and speed rating must equal or exceed the original specification. Hyundai's range advice: keep tires at the specified pressure and use tires made for electric vehicles. Michelin USA: If your EV came from the factory with HL tires, every replacement must also be HL rated. The catch is the tire warranty. Pirelli honors only 80% of the treadwear mileage warranty when its regular (non-Elect) tires are used on an electric vehicle. Yokohama says its mileage warranties may be lower on an EV unless the tire carries its EV mark on the sidewall. EV tire lines add extras such as noise-reducing technology (25 of the 39 lines we list have it in at least some sizes).

Staggered sets (different front and rear sizes) can only be rotated side to side.

Which EVs have staggered tires (different sizes front and rear)?

On our list: Rivian R1S, model years 2025 onward (22" Super Sport); Rivian R1T, model years 2025 onward (22" Super Sport); Tesla Model 3, model years 2024 onward (20" Warp); Tesla Model S, model years 2021 onward (19-inch all-season, 21-inch all-season and 21-inch summer); Tesla Model X, model years 2021 onward (20-inch all-season, 22-inch all-season and 22-inch summer); Tesla Model Y, redesign, model years 2025 onward (19" Machina 2.0, 20" Uberhelix and 21" Arachnid 2.0); Tesla Model Y, original design, model years 2020 to 2025 (21-inch). Staggered tires are bought as two sizes, so check both axles; the finder above lists each size.

How long is the treadwear warranty on EV tires?

20,000 to 80,000 miles across the 19 EV tire lines we list that publish one: Bridgestone Turanza EV, 50,000; Goodyear ElectricDrive 2, 45,000; Goodyear Wrangler ElectricDrive AT, 50,000; Hankook iON evo / iON evo SUV, 30,000; Hankook iON evo AS / iON evo AS SUV, 55,000; Hankook iON HT, 80,000; Hankook iON i*cept / iON i*cept SUV, 30,000; Kumho Crugen EV HP71, 50,000; Kumho Majesty 9 EV TA91, 50,000; Kumho Solus EV TA31, 50,000; Michelin Pilot Sport EV, 20,000; Pirelli P Zero AS Plus 3 Elect, 50,000; Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus Elect, 50,000; Pirelli Scorpion ATR Elect, 50,000; Pirelli Scorpion XTM AT Elect, 55,000; Pirelli Scorpion Zero AS Plus 3 Elect, 50,000; Sailun ERANGE EV, 50,000; Toyo Open Country A/T III EV, 65,000; Yokohama ADVAN Sport EV A/S, 55,000. 14 of them cut the mileage when the front and rear tires are different sizes, which matters on staggered cars. The other 20 publish no mileage warranty. None covers the tires a car came with from the factory.

What do UTQG tire grades mean?

NHTSA: The treadwear grade compares a tire with a control tire graded 100 on a government test course: a tire graded 150 should wear one and a half times as well on that course. Real-world wear can differ a lot from the treadwear grade, because of driving habits, service practices, road conditions and climate. Traction grades run AA, A, B, C from best to worst. They measure straight-line braking on wet pavement only, not cornering, acceleration or hydroplaning. Temperature grades run A (best), B, C and show how well a tire resists building up heat on a laboratory test wheel. C is the minimum every passenger car tire must meet. The grade assumes the tire is properly inflated and not overloaded. The tire maker (or the brand owner) must provide the grades for each tire, and each tire must be able to perform at the grades on its label. The grading rule covers new passenger car tires, so light-truck (LT) tires fall outside it. It also exempts deep-tread winter-type snow tires, temporary spares, tires for rims 12 inches or smaller, and limited-production tires. The finder shows the grades and new tread depth each tire maker publishes for the exact size.

Sources and method

Every factory size comes from the automaker's own US document: the owner's manual first, then its US press spec sheet or US website. Trim names come from the automaker's US configurator or model page, dated where they reflect the current lineup. We record the exact text that shows each size, load index, speed rating and pressure, and our build fails if a number on this page is not in that text. A value the automaker does not state is shown as not published, never filled in from another year, region or trim.

EV tire lines come from each tire maker's own US site: the product page, its size table and its warranty document. UTQG grades and new tread depth come from each tire maker's own size table, size by size, in the maker's own units; we record the row that shows them, and our build fails if a grade or depth on this page is not in that row. Tire wear findings are read at the organization that produced them, not in coverage of them. We do not use tire retailers, size-lookup sites, forums or videos as sources.

In the finder's "Your tire, explained" panel, the pounds behind a load index and the mph behind a speed rating are copied from Pirelli's published US charts, as printed, and checked against Giti Tire's and Michelin's charts; where they print a different figure for the same code, we show Pirelli's and record the difference. Sidewall height and overall height are worked out from the size itself: width times the aspect ratio, and the rim diameter plus two sidewalls.

What we do not do: we do not test tires, rank them, or show prices or star ratings. No brand or retailer pays for placement or for links, and the tire lines are listed by brand. We link to review and test sites without copying their scores, ratings or review counts.
