Can You Charge a Non-Tesla at a Tesla Supercharger?

Yes — with a caveat. Most non-Tesla EVs sold in the US can now charge at a Tesla Supercharger:
newer cars plug their native NACS port straight in, and older CCS1 cars use a certified NACS-to-CCS1 adapter.
About two-thirds of Tesla's roughly 37,700 US stalls are open to non-Teslas, and you
pay a premium over Tesla owners unless you take Tesla's optional $12.99/month membership.
The reverse is also yes: a Tesla can charge at Electrify America, EVgo and IONNA — directly at IONNA (both plugs
on every stall), and via Tesla's CCS Combo adapter at CCS-only sites.
Non-Tesla at a Supercharger: the two paths
Which path you're on depends entirely on your car's charge port. There is no third option — it's native NACS or an adapter.
Native NACS
Plug straight in
Most 2025–2026 EVs ship with a built-in NACS (SAE J3400) port and charge at a Supercharger exactly like a
Tesla — no adapter. The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 was the first non-Tesla with one; Rivian, GM (starting with the
Cadillac Optiq), Kia, Lexus, Subaru and Toyota have followed.
CCS1 + adapter
Add a NACS-to-CCS1 adapter
Cars with the older CCS1 port — most Ford, GM, BMW, Mercedes, Polestar and pre-2025 Hyundai/Kia/Rivian EVs —
reach Superchargers through a NACS-to-CCS1 DC adapter. Our adapter guide ranks the

The one non-negotiable safety rule: UL 2252
A DC fast-charge adapter moves up to 500A at 1000V — roughly the energy of a welding rig. Uncertified knockoffs
have overheated and caught fire, and one first-generation adapter was recalled. Buy only a UL 2252-listed
adapter (that standard covers the whole adapter, not just the connector), and know that Ford, GM and Hyundai may
decline warranty coverage for charge-port damage tied to a third-party unit.
Check your automaker first. Several brands supplied owners a free NACS adapter — Hyundai, Kia,
Genesis, Toyota, Volvo and Porsche among them — though several of those programs have since closed to new buyers
(the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis giveaway ended September 30, 2025). Ford and Rivian, which ran early free giveaways, now
sell the adapter as a paid accessory (about $200), and GM has charged for its (~$225) from the start. An
official manufacturer adapter is the safest path for warranty coverage, so check your owner portal before buying
third-party.
Tesla Supercharger & NACS adapter interoperability issues (2025–2026)
NACS access is nearly universal now, but a few real interoperability gaps remain. The ones worth knowing before you rely on a Supercharger:
Slower charging for 800V cars on older stalls. Most non-Teslas charge at normal speeds on V3/V4 Superchargers, but an 800V car on Tesla’s 400V V3 hardware is throttled — the Lucid Air, for instance, is capped near 50 kW on a V3 stall, so an adapter suits occasional use rather than road-trip speed. Fast-charging 800V Hyundai, Kia, Genesis and Porsche models also hit higher peaks on high-power CCS stalls than on a 400V Supercharger.
Adapter certification is a genuine safety issue. A DC fast-charge adapter carries up to 500A at 1000V; uncertified knockoffs have overheated and caught fire, and at least one first-generation adapter was recalled. Buy only a UL 2252-listed adapter.
Warranty risk with third-party adapters. Ford, GM and Hyundai advise against third-party adapters and may decline warranty coverage for charge-port damage tied to one, so an official manufacturer adapter is the safest path.
Three models still can’t use a Supercharger at all: the Nissan Leaf (2011–2025, CHAdeMO port with no NACS adapter path), the Audi Q4 e-tron (2022–2026, no manufacturer-approved NACS adapter) and the VinFast VF 8 (2023–2026, no manufacturer-approved NACS adapter). The all-new 2026 Nissan Leaf switches to a native NACS port, so only the 2011–2025 cars are shut out.
The reverse: can a Tesla charge at Electrify America, EVgo or IONNA?
Yes. A Tesla's NACS plug doesn't physically fit a CCS1 charger, so at CCS-only Electrify
America and EVgo sites you use Tesla's own CCS Combo adapter. IONNA is the easy case — every
stall carries both NACS and CCS1 connectors, so a Tesla plugs straight in with no adapter — and both Electrify
America and EVgo are adding NACS connectors that will make the adapter unnecessary at more sites over time.
A bit of history: before most cars had NACS ports or adapters, Tesla's “Magic Dock” — a
NACS-to-CCS1 adapter built into the charging post and unlocked through the Tesla app — was how a CCS car used a
Supercharger. Tesla began installing Magic Docks in early 2023, but the rollout stayed small; only a fraction of
Superchargers ever got one. Once NACS was finalized as the SAE J3400 standard in 2024 and automakers shifted to
native ports and their own adapters, the Magic Dock became a footnote rather than the main path.

What it costs: the non-Tesla premium
Charging a non-Tesla at a Supercharger is convenient, not free — and it's priced higher than what Tesla owners pay.
By Tesla's published rates, sessions run about $0.30–0.45/kWh (up to roughly $0.60 at peak or
congested sites), and non-Tesla drivers pay roughly a 40% premium over Tesla owners.
The fix is Tesla's optional $12.99/month membership, which drops non-Tesla rates to Tesla-equivalent
pricing and pays for itself at about 80–100 kWh a month — so if you fast-charge more than a couple of times a month,
it's worth it. For context, Tesla runs about 37,700 US stalls, roughly half of all US DC
fast charging, and its network has ranked highest in J.D. Power's customer-satisfaction study five years running.
Rival open networks price similarly (Electrify America about $0.43–0.60/kWh, EVgo about $0.45–0.65/kWh), with their
own membership plans.
