How much range you'll lose

Share of EPA range kept at each temperature, from the same model our range-vs-temperature tool uses (70°F = 100%). A heat pump makes the biggest difference; use the tool for your exact car.

Outside temperatureHeat pumpResistive heatNot confirmed
50°F Cool ~91% ~87% ~89%
32°F Freezing ~83% ~75% ~79%
20°F Hard freeze ~78% ~67% ~73%
0°F Deep cold ~69% ~54% ~62%
-10°F Arctic ~64% ~47% ~56%

Estimates, not measurements: real range swings with speed, cabin heat use and preconditioning, and below about -10°F losses can run deeper than this straight-line model. Model last verified July 21, 2026; methodology and sources on the EV Range vs Temperature page.

8 free winter habits that matter most

None of these costs anything. Each links to the manual or agency it comes from.

  1. Warm the car up while it is still plugged in

Set a departure time so the cabin and battery are warm when you leave. Tesla recommends starting climate at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure; Ford says a car with a departure time set preconditions its cabin and battery while plugged in. Tesla also notes that preconditioning before you leave avoids the reduced regenerative braking a cold battery causes.

  2. Leave it plugged in overnight and when parked for days

NHTSA's winter advice for EVs is to keep the battery charged and plug in at night so the pack stays in its best temperature range. Ford says a plugged-in car keeps its battery above freezing; Tesla says staying plugged in uses the charging system, rather than the battery, to keep the battery warm.

Sources: NHTSA: Winter Weather Driving Tips, Ford: Winter Ready: Ford's Guide to Cold Weather Electric Vehicle Confidence, Tesla: Model Y Owner's Manual: Cold Weather Best Practices

  3. Heat yourself, not the cabin

Use the heated seats and heated steering wheel first and turn the cabin temperature down. Tesla says seat heaters use less energy than the cabin heater, and Ford gives the same advice for its EVs.

Sources: Tesla: Model Y Owner's Manual: Cold Weather Best Practices, Ford: Winter Ready: Ford's Guide to Cold Weather Electric Vehicle Confidence

  4. Re-check tire pressure every time it gets colder

Tires lose about 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature (Tesla's manual and Michelin both give that figure). Inflate to the pressure on the driver's door-jamb label, not the maximum printed on the tire, and measure when the tires are cold, meaning not driven for at least three hours (NHTSA).

Sources: Tesla: Model Y Owner's Manual: Cold Weather Best Practices, Michelin USA: Winter tire timing and PSI tips, NHTSA: Winter Weather Driving Tips

  5. Navigate to a fast charger so the battery arrives warm

A cold battery charges slowly. On a Tesla, using the built-in navigation to a Supercharger preheats the battery on the way; Tesla recommends at least 30 to 45 minutes of navigation before arrival, and preconditioning before you leave if the drive is shorter. Other makers offer battery preconditioning on some models too; check your owner's manual for how it is triggered.

  6. Fit winter tires, then tell the car

Winter tires add traction on snow and ice. Tesla notes that new winter tires can briefly reduce regenerative braking while the car recalibrates, and that selecting winter tires in the service menu speeds that up. Check your owner's manual before fitting chains; Tesla tells you to check local rules and its own chain guidance.

  7. Stop the charge port, wipers and handles freezing shut

Tesla's Defrost Car setting melts ice on the windshield, windows, mirrors and charge port, and a scheduled precondition helps stop the charge-port latch freezing in place. Before a snowfall, Tesla suggests Wiper Service Mode (wipers raised so they defrost with the glass) and turning off auto-folding mirrors. Its Model Y manual also suggests a little WD-40 on the door-handle pivot pins before ice builds up.

  8. Stock the car like any winter car, with one EV change

NHTSA's winter list: a snow shovel, broom and ice scraper; sand or cat litter for traction; jumper cables, a flashlight and warning devices; a first-aid kit; blankets; and a phone charger, water, food and any medicine. For an EV, swap the jumper cables for a portable jump starter: AAA says never to jump-start an EV with another EV or a hybrid, so you may not find a safe donor car.

The 12-volt battery: the EV winter problem nobody expects

Range gets the headlines, but the call for roadside help is often about a much smaller battery.

Every EV still carries a small 12-volt battery (Tesla calls it the low-voltage battery) alongside the big traction pack. If it goes flat, the car may not unlock, wake up or drive, even with plenty of range left.

Sources: AAA Club Alliance: Jump-Starting an EV: Take These Precautions to Prevent Damage, Chevrolet: How to access your Equinox EV's 12-Volt battery

Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y manuals describe reviving it with an external low-voltage power supply, such as a portable jump starter, connected under the maintenance panel at the front of the car. The procedure and connection points differ by model, so follow your own manual.

Sources: Tesla: Model Y Owner's Manual: Jump Starting, Tesla: Model 3 Owner's Manual: Jump Starting

Do not use your EV to jump another car. Tesla's manuals say a Model 3 or Model Y cannot be used to jump start another vehicle and that doing so can cause damage.

Sources: Tesla: Model Y Owner's Manual: Jump Starting, Tesla: Model 3 Owner's Manual: Jump Starting

Do not jump an EV from another EV or a hybrid either. AAA warns this can damage the electrical systems of both cars and suggests keeping a portable jump starter in the car.

A dead 12-volt battery can also lock you out. Chevrolet's guide for the Equinox EV has you open the liftgate with the key hidden inside the fob and climb through to the driver's seat to pull the hood release.

The winter kit

Five things worth buying, most important first. Each met our bar on the day we checked: a strong rating from a large number of buyers on its Amazon page, sold new and in stock, and, for the jump starter, a stated UL safety certification. Floor liners are listed only for the model years their listings name.

LOKITHOR JA300 Jump Starter + Tire Inflator

Portable 12-volt jump starter with a built-in air compressor
Most important

Revives a dead 12-volt battery without a second car, and tops up tires that lost pressure overnight.

What it is
1,500A peak 12V jump starter; 150 PSI inflator with a preset auto shut-off; 45Wh battery that doubles as a USB power bank; 300-lumen light (per listing)
Certification
Listing states UL 2743 certified (the safety standard for portable power packs)
Maker's price
$99.99 on LOKITHOR's own store, 2026-10-04

Why we picked it: An EV with a flat 12-volt battery can be stuck in the driveway with a full traction pack, and AAA warns against jumping it from another EV or a hybrid, so the dependable fix is a self-contained 12V supply. This unit pairs a jump pack with a tire inflator that stops at the pressure you set, which covers the two most common winter problems in one box. Its listing states UL 2743 certification. LOKITHOR's own spec sheet gives an operating range down to -4°F, so on colder nights keep it in the cabin or indoors, not in the frunk or trunk.

Strengths
  • Jump pack and tire inflator in one unit
  • Listing states UL 2743 certification
  • Inflator stops at a preset pressure (per listing)
  • Also a USB power bank and flashlight
Watch-outs
  • Rated to operate down to -4°F; store it somewhere warmer on the coldest nights
  • Jump points and steps differ by car: follow your owner's manual
  • Bulkier than a jump-only pack
Best for: Every EV owner who parks outside or drives through a real winter. Check price on Amazon

JACO ElitePro Digital Tire Pressure Gauge

Digital tire pressure gauge
Cheapest range win

The quickest way to act on the 1 PSI per 10°F rule every time the temperature drops.

What it is
0–100 PSI with 0.1 PSI resolution; backlit display; built-in bleed valve; flexible hose with swivel chuck; 2×AAA batteries included (per listing)
Certification
Listing: calibrated to ANSI Grade 2A, accurate to ±0.5 PSI

Why we picked it: Tire pressure falls with the temperature, and the fix is to measure cold and top up to the door-jamb figure. A dedicated gauge makes that a one-minute monthly habit. The bleed valve lets you let air out without resetting the reading, which helps after overfilling with an inflator.

Strengths
  • Listing states ±0.5 PSI accuracy
  • Bleed valve for fine adjustment
  • Backlit screen for dark mornings
Watch-outs
  • Measures only; pair it with an inflator
  • Runs on two AAA batteries (included)
Best for: Anyone who wants to check pressure at home, cold, before the tire warning light does it for them. Check price on Amazon

LASFIT All-Weather Floor Liners (Tesla Model 3 / Model Y)

Vehicle-specific all-weather TPE floor liners
Verified fit

Keeps slush and road salt off the carpet, in a set cut for your exact car.

What it is
Laser-scanned TPE liners with raised edges; full sets include trunk mats (per listing)
Certification
Not applicable (no electrical parts)

Why we picked it: Winter boots carry slush and salt straight onto the carpet, and NHTSA recommends swapping to thicker, rubbery mats for the season, provided they are the correct size and fit for your vehicle and properly secured, because a loose mat can interfere with the pedals. That is why this pick is a set of year- and trim-specific liners rather than a universal mat: each link below goes to the set whose listing names that exact car.

Strengths
  • Each set's listing names the model years it fits
  • Raised edges hold meltwater
  • Full sets include cargo-area mats
Watch-outs
  • Tesla only here; for another EV, buy by exact year and trim from a maker's fit tool
  • The new-body Model Y set does not fit the Standard trim
  • Costs more than universal mats
Pick the set for your car
  • Model Y 2025–2026 (new body), Premium and Performance Listing: 2025–2026 Model Y (Juniper) 5-seat; only fits Premium and Performance; not the Model Y Standard.
    Check price on Amazon
  • Model 3 2024–2026 (Highland) Listing: Tesla Model 3 Highland 2024, 2025, 2026.
    Check price on Amazon
  • Model Y 2020–2025 (original body), 5-seat Listing: Model Y 5-seat 2020–2025; not the new-body (Juniper) Model Y and not the 2020 original-mount version.

Best for: Tesla Model 3 and Model Y owners in snow or salt country, buying the set that matches their exact year and trim.

EcoNour Windshield Snow Cover (universal)

Windshield snow and frost cover
For outdoor parking

Lift the snow off with the cover instead of scraping it off the glass.

What it is
600D Oxford fabric; side flaps close inside the front doors and elastic straps loop over the mirrors; universal fit (per listing)
Certification
Not applicable (no electrical parts)

Why we picked it: If your EV is plugged in, a scheduled precondition or a defrost setting can melt frost using grid power. Parked on the street without a plug, that heat comes out of the battery. A cover keeps snow and ice off the windshield and wipers so you can peel it away and go.

Strengths
  • Covers the windshield and wiper blades
  • Held by door flaps and mirror straps
  • Folds into a pouch
Watch-outs
  • Universal size: measure your windshield against the listing's size chart
  • It has to come off before you drive, so plan where a wet cover goes
Best for: Cars parked outside, especially where you cannot plug in to run a defrost first. Check price on Amazon

Snow Joe SJBLZD Snow Broom + Ice Scraper

Telescoping foam snow broom with ice scraper
Sized for crossovers

A foam push-broom long enough to clear the roof of a crossover.

What it is
18-inch foam head; handle extends from 33 to 52 inches; built-in ice scraper (per listing)
Certification
Not applicable (no electrical parts)

Why we picked it: Most popular EVs are crossovers with long, flat roofs and large windshields, which a short brush cannot reach. The listing describes a non-abrasive foam head made to clear paint, glass and trim without scratching, a reach of up to 52 inches, and a scraper built into the other end.

Strengths
  • Extends to 52 inches
  • Non-abrasive foam head (per listing)
  • Ice scraper built in
Watch-outs
  • A full-size truck or large SUV roof may still be out of reach
  • Foam pushes snow; it does not break hard ice (use the scraper)
Best for: Owners of taller EVs such as the Model Y, Ioniq 5, Mach-E or Equinox EV. Check price on Amazon

Shopping for someone else? The same jump starter, gauge and snow broom appear in our gifts for EV owners guide, sorted by budget. More year-round accessories are on the EV gear page.

What we left out, and why

  • 12-volt heated blankets, seat covers and plug-in heaters. They plug into the car's 12-volt socket, and we only recommend plug-in gear when a UL or ETL listing is documented; we did not confirm one for this category. Your EV's heated seats and wheel do the same job, and Tesla says seat heaters use less energy than the cabin heater.
  • Plug-in dash cams. Same bar: the dash cam listing we checked did not document a UL or ETL listing for its 12-volt power adapter. Many Teslas already have a camera-based dashcam; it needs a USB drive (see our gift guide).
  • Portable chargers and extension cords for the cold. Charging equipment is covered in our home-charger guide, where each pick gets the certification checks it needs.

For home charging equipment, see our best home EV chargers guide; for Supercharger adapters and the UL 2252 rule, see best NACS adapters.

Frequently asked questions

How much range does an EV lose in winter?

In the model behind our EV Range vs Temperature tool, calibrated to Recurrent's winter fleet data, an EV with a heat pump keeps about 83% of its EPA range at 32°F and 78% at 20°F. One with resistive cabin heat keeps about 75% and 67%. Below about -10°F real losses can run deeper than the model shows. Look up your own car on the EV Range vs Temperature page.

Can you jump-start an electric car?

Yes, but you are jump-starting its small 12-volt battery, not the main battery pack. Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y manuals describe connecting an external low-voltage power supply, such as a portable jump starter, under the maintenance panel at the front of the car. Procedures differ by model, so follow your own owner's manual.

Can I use my EV to jump-start another car?

Not a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y: Tesla's manuals say they cannot be used to jump start another vehicle and that doing so can cause damage. AAA also warns never to jump-start an EV with another EV or a hybrid. Check your own manual before using any EV as a donor.

Should I keep my EV plugged in when it is cold?

Yes, where you can. NHTSA suggests plugging in at night in winter so the battery stays in its best temperature range. Ford says a plugged-in car keeps its battery above freezing, and Tesla says staying plugged in uses the charging system, rather than the battery, to keep the battery warm.

Does preconditioning an EV save range?

Tesla says warming the cabin and battery before driving helps you get maximum range and performance, and recommends starting at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure. Set a departure time while the car is plugged in; preconditioning also avoids the reduced regenerative braking a cold battery causes.

How much does tire pressure drop in cold weather?

About 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in outside temperature, according to Tesla's owner's manual and Michelin. Inflate to the pressure on the driver's door-jamb label, not the maximum printed on the tire, and check when the tires are cold (NHTSA says not driven for at least three hours).

What should be in an EV winter emergency kit?

NHTSA's winter list: a snow shovel, broom and ice scraper; sand or cat litter for traction; jumper cables, a flashlight and warning devices; a first-aid kit; blankets; and a phone charger, water, food and any medicine. For an EV, carry a portable jump starter instead of relying on jumper cables and another car.

How we picked

Tips come from Tesla's owner's manuals, Ford and Chevrolet owner guidance, and NHTSA, AAA and Michelin, and each one links to its source. Range figures are computed from the model on our range-vs-temperature page, not typed in. For products, we read each Amazon product page ourselves on the verification date and kept only items that showed a strong rating from a large number of buyers, were sold new and in stock, and matched the brand and model named here. The jump starter needed a stated safety certification, and the floor liners needed a listing that names the exact model years. We have not tested these products ourselves; specs come from the listings and makers. We don't show star ratings or prices from Amazon.

Prices shown are the maker's own store price on the date given, with its source; we never show Amazon prices, which change constantly and which Amazon's Associates terms do not let us quote. A product with no maker price on file shows none. Click through for the current price.
