The Charge Port's Take

Hand-written editorial · last updated October 2026

A new sedan, not the old i3 hatchback

The 2027 i3 50 xDrive is the first all-electric BMW 3 Series and the second Neue Klasse model, after the iX3. It shares only its name with the i3 hatchback BMW sold in the US for the 2014 to 2021 model years: this is a 3 Series sedan, sold beside the gas 3 Series, and bmwusa.com files it under the 3 Series. The old hatchback's recalls, complaints and warranty terms don't apply to it, and this page doesn't use them.

Price, reservations and delivery timing

BMW USA lists one configuration, the i3 50 xDrive, at $61,500 plus $1,350 destination ($62,850), the same base MSRP as the iX3 50 xDrive. Reservations are open: you build the car on bmwusa.com, a dealer confirms it, and you pay a $1,000 refundable deposit, which BMW says does not lock the price. BMW says US deliveries begin in early 2027, which is why this page lists the i3 as announced rather than on sale. Packages are Sport (no charge), M Sport (+$2,000) and M Sport Professional (+$3,200). The i3 is built at BMW's Munich plant in Germany, where series production began in August 2026. No federal EV tax credit applies; it ended September 30, 2025.

Range: a BMW estimate until EPA rates it

BMW's preliminary US estimate is 446 to 468 miles depending on wheels and tires: 468 on 19- or 20-inch summer tires, 460 on 21-inch staggered summer tires, 450 on 19-inch all-season tires and 446 on 20-inch all-season tires. EPA hasn't rated the i3 yet, so there is no EPA range or efficiency figure for it, and we'll replace BMW's numbers when EPA publishes one. BMW's European figure of up to 900 km is a WLTP number and isn't comparable.

Charging: native NACS, 400 kW and 21 minutes

The i3 has a native NACS port as standard, with Plug & Charge at Tesla Superchargers and IONNA stations, and BMW includes a CCS1 DC adapter for other fast chargers; a J1772 adapter for Level 2 stations is an $86 option. DC charging peaks at 400 kW, and BMW quotes 10% to 80% in 21 minutes. At home the onboard charger accepts up to 15.4 kW. BMW lists a 112.2 kWh battery on an 800-volt architecture but doesn't say whether that figure is gross or usable, and it publishes no full Level 2 charge time for the i3. BMW USA also lists bidirectional charging, V2L at 2.4 kW and V2H at 3.6 kW, through optional adapters ($195 and $350).

Performance and equipment

Two motors drive all four wheels with 463 hp and 476 lb-ft; the rear motor is an electrically excited synchronous motor. BMW's preliminary 0-60 mph time is 4.5 seconds. Standard equipment includes 19-inch wheels, Driving Assistant Plus with adaptive cruise and Steering Assistant, BMW Panoramic Vision, a panoramic glass roof, heated front seats and BMW Digital Key Plus; Highway & Commuting Assistant, hands-free up to 85 mph, is optional. BMW lists a 40/20/40 split rear seat, so we count five seats. It hasn't published cargo volume or US dimensions for the sedan.

How it compares

Tesla's Model 3 is the obvious rival, and it is on sale now: the Premium AWD costs $47,490 with 346 miles of EPA range and a 3.8-second 0-60, and the Performance $54,990 with 316 miles. The i3 costs more at $61,500 and promises more range, up to 468 miles, but that is BMW's estimate rather than an EPA rating, and the car isn't delivered yet. BMW's own i4 eDrive40, at $57,900 with 307 to 333 miles of EPA range, still uses a CCS1 port for 2026. Both the Model 3 and the i3 have native NACS ports.

Yes — the BMW i3 configuration in our database is all-wheel drive, using a second motor for better traction in snow/rain and faster acceleration than a comparable single-motor EV. Our database lists one representative configuration per model, not a complete trim table. A single-motor version may also be offered, so confirm the drivetrain on the exact trim you're configuring.

How many people does the BMW i3 seat?

The BMW i3 seats 5.

Does the 2027 BMW i3 qualify for a federal EV tax credit?

No. The federal Clean Vehicle Credit (IRC §30D) expired on September 30, 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act — no new EVs purchased on or after October 1, 2025 qualify. State incentives remain available: see our /deals page for current rebates in California, Maine, Colorado, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and other states. The Section 30C EV Charger Tax Credit (for home charger installation) expired June 30, 2026 — if your charger was placed in service on or before that date, you can still claim it (30% up to $1,000) on your 2026 return via IRS Form 8911.

How long will the BMW i3 battery last?

Real-world data from EV fleets suggests modern lithium-ion EV batteries (2020+) retain roughly 85–90% of their original capacity at 100,000 miles and 80–85% at 200,000 miles.

What is the BMW i3 battery warranty?

The BMW i3 battery warranty for 2027+ cars is 8 years / 100,000 miles. BMW hasn't published a capacity floor or transfer terms for it in the material we've read, so check the warranty booklet before you rely on either. Compare it with every other EV in our EV battery warranty rankings.

The 2027 BMW i3 is an upcoming midsize electric sedan that isn't on sale in the US yet. BMW has announced US pricing from $61,500. BMW lists up to 468 miles of estimated range and a 4.5-second 0-60 mph time with all-wheel drive. DC fast charging can add significant range in as little as 21 minutes.
