The verdict

These are different tools that overlap on adventure. The Jeep Recon is a two-row, five-seat off-roader with removable doors, Jeep's Trail Rated badge and 670 hp, and at $65,000 before destination it costs $18,990 less than the $83,990 R1S Premium, the cheapest R1S Rivian sells. The R1S is a three-row, seven-seat SUV that goes much farther on a charge (289 to 329 miles for the Premium, up to 410 with the Long Range pack, against the Recon's 222) and plugs straight into Tesla Superchargers with a native NACS port; the Recon has a CCS1 port and reaches Tesla's V3 and V4 Superchargers through an adapter, which Stellantis enabled on March 19, 2026. The Recon is quicker than the base R1S (3.6 seconds to 60 mph in Sport mode against 4.5), but the R1S Performance and Quad are quicker still. Buy the Recon for open-air trail driving at a lower price; buy the R1S for range, a third row and simpler road trips.

Price, range and efficiency

The Recon comes one way for now: the $65,000 Moab, plus a $1,995 destination charge. Jeep's site says quantities are limited, and its spec sheet mentions an Overland trim that has no price or date yet. The R1S runs from $83,990 (Premium) through $90,990 (Premium with the Long Range pack) and $106,990 (Performance) to $121,990 (Quad). Range is the biggest gap. EPA rates the Recon at 222 miles; the R1S Premium at 289 to 329 depending on configuration, and the Long Range R1S at up to 410. EPA's efficiency ratings point the same way: 48 kWh per 100 miles for the Recon against 39 for the R1S Premium, so the Jeep also uses more electricity, and costs more to charge, per mile.

Charging and Supercharger access

Every 2026-and-newer R1S has a native NACS port and plugs straight into Tesla Superchargers. The Recon has a CCS1 port. Stellantis opened Tesla's V3 and V4 Superchargers to its EVs, the 2026 Recon among them, on March 19, 2026, using the Free2move Charge NACS-CCS1 DC adapter, which Mopar lists at $255; Jeep's own Recon page still says access is coming 'soon'. CCS networks such as Electrify America and EVgo need no adapter. Fast-charge times don't line up neatly. Our table's 10-80% time for the R1S Premium is 36 minutes (38 for the other trims). Jeep quotes about 28 minutes from 5% to 80% and publishes no 10-80% time, so the table shows 'Not published' for the Recon rather than set two different charging windows side by side. Jeep also publishes no peak charging rate.

Space, seats and what each is for

The R1S seats seven across three rows and lists 17.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row (48.6 with it folded) plus a 9.9-cubic-foot front trunk; the Recon seats five, with 30.3 cubic feet behind its second row plus a 3.0-cubic-foot front trunk, per Jeep. The Recon's case is its open-air, trail-first design: removable doors, Trail Rated capability and 9.1 inches of ground clearance on the Moab, plus 3.6 seconds to 60 mph in Sport mode against 4.5 for the base R1S. The R1S counters with range, the third row, native Supercharger access and a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+; neither NHTSA nor IIHS has published a rating for the Recon. On warranties, our data lists 8 years/150,000 miles with a 70% capacity floor for the R1S battery; Jeep lists 8 years/100,000 miles for the Recon's battery, with no capacity floor in the pages we read.
