The honest answer is "which of the three plugs?" — a regular outlet, a 240V home charger, or a DC fast charger differ by a factor of a hundred. At a DC fast charger, most current EVs go from 10% to 80% in about 25–35 minutes — the fastest (800-volt Hyundai, Kia, and Porsche models) in about 18, the biggest-battery trucks up to 50. At home on a 240V Level 2 charger, empty-to-full takes about 8–11 hours for most models — an overnight charge. On a regular 120V outlet, a full charge takes 60–100 hours — days, not hours.
The reframe that makes EV ownership click: you almost never charge from empty. A typical US driver covers about 33 miles a day, and putting that back takes roughly 1–1.5 hours of Level 2 charging — done while you sleep. Fast charging is a road-trip tool, not a daily routine.
The three charging speeds, in one table
Every EV charging question reduces to which of three "levels" you're plugged into. The times below are for a typical 300-mile-range 2026 EV (the median of the 184 trims in our database).

All DC times are 10–80% manufacturer-claimed figures under ideal conditions — a warm battery, a charger at least as powerful as the car's maximum, and a low starting charge. Why some EVs charge in 18 minutes and others take 40: 800V vs 400V
The spread in the table isn't random — it's mostly electrical architecture. Power is voltage × current, and current is what makes cables and battery cells heat up. An 800-volt car moves the same power at half the current of a 400-volt car, so it can hold high charging power for most of the session instead of hitting a brief peak and backing off to manage heat.
- 800V class (18–24 min): Hyundai Ioniq 5 / Ioniq 6 and Kia EV6 (18 min 10–80%), Porsche Taycan (18 min), plus the bigger-battery Ioniq 9 and EV9 (24 min). These hold near-peak power deep into the charge.
- 400V mainstream (25–40 min): Tesla Model 3 / Model Y (25–25 min), Ford Mustang Mach-E (36 min), Chevrolet Equinox EV (34 min), Blazer EV (40 min). Strong peaks, earlier taper.
- Big-battery trucks (38–50 min): more kWh simply takes more minutes, even at high power — the F-150 Lightning Extended (38 min) and the 478-mile GMC Sierra EV Denali Max Range (50 min) bookend the slow end while adding the most range per stop.
One catch: the charger has to be able to deliver what the car can take. An Ioniq 5 only hits its 18-minute figure on a 350 kW stall; on a 150 kW charger the same car takes noticeably longer. Why real-world times run longer
Three honest caveats to the rated numbers above:
- Cold weather slows DC charging — a lot. A cold battery can't safely accept full power, so a winter fast-charging stop can take well beyond the rated time on an unconditioned pack. Precondition by setting the charger as your in-car navigation destination so the pack arrives warm. Cold also cuts range itself — see our range-vs-temperature tool for model-by-model winter numbers.
- Charging tapers hard after 80%. To protect the cells, power drops steeply near full — going 80→100% at a DC charger can take nearly as long as 10→80%. On road trips, two short stops in the fat part of the curve beat one long charge to 100%.
- You rarely charge 0–100% anyway. Daily driving is a ~1–1.5-hour overnight top-up, and road-trip stops live in the 10–80% window. The "full charge" number matters far less than the chart above makes it look — and what those sessions cost is broken down in our cost-to-charge guide.

Roughly 25–30 minutes for a 10–80% charge in most Teslas. A Tesla Model 3 Standard RWD is rated at 25 minutes for 10–80%; a Model Y Standard RWD at 25 minutes, adding about 225 miles of range. V3 and V4 Superchargers deliver 250–325 kW. Non-Tesla EVs with NACS access charge at whatever their own car supports — the plug doesn't change the car's maximum charging speed.
How long does it take to charge an EV on a regular outlet?
Days, not hours. A standard 120V outlet (Level 1) adds only about 3–5 miles of range per hour, so a full charge on a typical 300-mile EV takes roughly 60–100 hours — two to four days of continuous charging. It's workable as a nightly top-up if you drive under ~40 miles a day (12 hours overnight adds 36–60 miles), but most owners treat Level 1 as a backup, not a plan.
Why does EV charging slow down after 80%?
To protect the battery. As lithium-ion cells fill, the charger must drop from full power to a trickle (the "taper") to avoid damaging the cells — like a sponge that absorbs the last bit of water slowly. Going from 80% to 100% at a DC fast charger can take nearly as long as going from 10% to 80%. That's why manufacturers quote 10–80% times, and why on road trips it's faster to make two short stops in the 10–80% window than to sit through one charge to full.
How long does it take to charge a Tesla?
At a Supercharger, 10–80% takes about 25 minutes in a Model 3 Standard RWD, 25 minutes in a Model Y Standard RWD, and 33 minutes in a Cybertruck AWD (manufacturer-claimed, ideal conditions). At home on Level 2, empty-to-full runs about ~6-8 hrs for the Model Y Standard and ~9-11 hrs for the Model 3 Standard — overnight either way.
How long does it take to charge a Hyundai Ioniq 5?
About 18 minutes for 10–80% on a 350 kW DC fast charger — among the fastest of any EV, adding roughly 223 miles of range. The Ioniq 5 (like the Ioniq 6, Kia EV6, and Genesis models) uses an 800-volt architecture that sustains high charging power instead of peaking briefly. At home on Level 2, a full charge takes about ~7-10 hrs.
Does cold weather slow down EV charging?
Yes, significantly. A cold battery can't safely accept high charging power, so DC fast-charging sessions in freezing weather can take substantially longer than the rated 10–80% time — sometimes twice as long on an unconditioned pack. The fix is battery preconditioning: navigate to the charger in the car's own navigation (or trigger preconditioning manually) so the pack is warm when you plug in. What is the fastest-charging EV?
