Charging an EV at home costs about $55 a month for a typical US driver. The math: 12,000 miles a year ÷ 12 = 1,000 miles a month. A typical EV uses 30 kWh per 100 miles, so that's 300 kWh. At the US average residential rate of $0.18/kWh, 300 kWh × $0.18 = $55.32 — about $664 a year.
The same 1,000 miles in a 28-MPG gas car at $4.00/gallon costs about $142.86 a month — roughly 3× as much. Public DC fast charging ($0.30–0.65/kWh) lands near gas prices, which is why where you charge matters more than what you drive.
What 100 miles costs: home vs fast charging vs gas
Cost per 100 miles is the cleanest way to compare, because it strips out battery sizes and tank sizes. One handy quirk: for an EV, dollars per 100 miles is numerically the same as cents per mile. All EV rows assume the site's standard 30 kWh/100 mi typical EV.

What public DC fast charging costs
Public fast charging runs about $0.30–0.65/kWh at most DC networks; ChargePoint host-set sites can be lower — two to four times the home rate. Per network:

The road-trip math
A worked example: 600 miles in a Tesla Model Y Standard RWD (24 kWh/100 mi EPA). You leave with a full overnight home charge, so the first ~250 miles ride on home-rate electricity; the remaining 350 miles are fast-charged on the road.
- Home leg: 250 mi × 24 kWh/100 mi = 60 kWh × $0.18 = $11.06
- Fast-charged leg: 350 mi × 24 kWh/100 mi = 84 kWh × $0.30–0.65 = $25.20–$54.60

Two honest caveats. First, highway consumption at 70–75 mph runs above the EPA figure — and cold weather adds more — so pad these numbers for winter trips. Second, at peak fast-charging prices an EV road trip can genuinely cost more than gas; the savings live at home. Timing stops off-peak and using a network membership keeps you at the low end of the range.
Time-of-use rates: the cheapest way to charge
Most utilities now offer time-of-use (TOU) or EV-specific rate plans with overnight power at roughly $0.05–0.10/kWh — often less than half the standard rate. Since EVs charge while you sleep anyway, this is nearly free money: the typical $55/month charging bill above drops to $15–$30/month on an off-peak rate — the energy-cost equivalent of paying about $0.84 a gallon.

Tesla Superchargers typically run about $0.30–0.45/kWh, rising to roughly $0.60/kWh at peak or congested sites. Non-Tesla drivers pay roughly a 40% premium unless they take Tesla's optional $12.99/month membership, which drops the rate to Tesla-equivalent pricing. What does a full charge cost?
Multiply EPA range by EPA efficiency to get the energy a 0–100% charge draws from the wall. A Tesla Model Y Standard RWD (321 mi, 24 kWh/100 mi) draws about 77 kWh: roughly $14.21 at home ($0.18/kWh) or about $37 at a typical DC fast charger ($0.48/kWh).
