The verdict

The Mini Countryman SE ALL4 is the cheaper car with more cargo space; the Volvo EX40 is the one that goes farther. MINI's only US EV for 2027 starts at $45,200 before destination with 308 hp and all-wheel drive, $9,950 below the rear-drive EX40 Single Motor Plus ($55,150) and $11,700 below the all-wheel-drive Twin Motor Plus ($56,900). Volvo now sells the EX40 only from dealer stock (its US configurator says 'only available as a stock model'), so check what's left. It reaches 60 mph in 5.4 seconds against 6.9 for the rear-drive Volvo, and lists 24.8 cubic feet of cargo space against 19. But EPA rates the Countryman at 216 miles, against 296 for the rear-drive EX40 and 260 for the all-wheel-drive version, and the 402-hp Twin Motor is quicker still, at 4.6 seconds. Both use CCS1 ports, so Superchargers need an adapter; Volvo documents one as standard on 2025 EX40s, while MINI requires a software upgrade plus an adapter it doesn't say it supplies. Buy the Mini if your driving fits comfortably inside 216 miles; buy the EX40 if you drive long distances.

Price and what you get

MINI sells the 2027 Countryman SE ALL4 with one powertrain: $45,200 with the Signature Plus trim, or $48,600 with the Iconic trim, which adds Harman Kardon audio and Parking Assistant Plus, plus a $1,350 destination charge. It's the only electric model in MINI USA's 2027 lineup. Volvo's 2026 EX40 comes as the Single Motor Plus ($55,150, rear-drive, 248 hp), the Twin Motor Plus ($56,900, all-wheel drive, 402 hp) and the Twin Motor Ultra Black Edition ($60,750), all before a $1,395 destination charge. Even the Iconic Countryman costs $8,300 less than the EX40 Twin Motor Plus. As of October 2026 Volvo sells the EX40 only from remaining dealer stock.

Range, speed and charging

Range is the EX40's strongest suit. EPA rates it at 296 miles with one motor and 260 with two, against 216 for the Countryman SE ALL4. The Mini is quicker than the rear-drive EX40 (5.4 seconds to 60 mph against 6.9) but slower than the Twin Motor (4.6). Fast charging is close to a wash: 29 minutes from 10 to 80% for the Mini and 28 for the Volvo in our table, with peaks of 130 kW for the Mini and 150 kW for the Volvo in our NACS data. Both list about 8 hours for a full Level 2 charge at home. The Countryman's EPA efficiency, 35 kWh/100 mi, sits between the rear-drive EX40's 32 and the Twin Motor's 36.

Supercharger access, space and ownership

Both use CCS1 ports, so Tesla Superchargers need an adapter. Volvo's NACS FAQ says the adapter comes standard with 2025 EX40s, so confirm it's in a 2026 car. MINI says Supercharging needs a Remote Software Upgrade plus a compatible NACS DC adapter, which it doesn't say it supplies; Superchargers with Tesla's Magic Dock work without either. The Countryman lists 24.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats against 19 for the EX40. Our ownership data covers only the Volvo: an 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty with a 70% capacity floor, and 50.7% of MSRP retained by a two-year-old 2024 EX40, rated D in our depreciation rankings. MINI lists 8 years/100,000 miles for the Countryman's battery, with no capacity floor stated.
